Do you want to create a guest bedroom that’s welcoming and comfortable but have no idea where to start? Don’t worry—I got you!
When we moved from New Jersey to Dallas, I knew we’d have family and friends visiting (Because, let’s be real, Texas winters > New Jersey winters). I wanted to make sure they felt at home, not like they were crashing at our place in a spare room with mismatched furniture and an air mattress that may deflate overnight. If that’s all you have, IT IS ALL GOOD! Don’t stress—I totally get that not everyone has a massive guest room. Even incorporating just a few of these (especially the functional ones) will make a difference. Your guests will notice—and they’ll definitely remember!
Below are the 10 key items I added to my own guest bedroom to elevate the space. Let’s go!
1. A TV – Because Not Everyone Wants to Watch Your Favorite Show
Having a separate TV in the guest room lets your visitors unwind with their own shows instead of awkwardly sitting through your 17th rewatch of The Office. They get their space, and you get yours—win-win!
2. A Mirror – For Those Who Like to See Themselves Before Heading Out
Mirrors not only make a space feel bigger, but they’re also a lifesaver when your guests are trying to get ready and the bathroom is occupied. A full-length mirror outside the bathroom gives them a spot to check their outfit (or take selfies—no judgment, I would!).
3. Tappable Sconces – Mood Lighting, but Functional
Small sconces near the bed let your guests wind down with dim lighting instead of blinding overhead lights. They’re perfect for reading, late-night emails, or just setting the vibe. Plus, they free up the nightstand space for phones, books, or that random glass of water everyone insists on keeping next to them at night.
4. A Chair – For Sitting (Or Piling Clothes, Let’s Be Honest)
If you have the space, a chair is a great addition. Whether your guests use it for reading, putting on shoes, or tossing their jackets over (because we all know that’s what happens), it adds comfort and function.
5. A Pull-Out Charger – Because Someone Always Forgets Theirs
How many times have you had a guest sheepishly ask, “Hey, do you have an extra charger?” Having a pull-out charger or a charging station in the guest room saves them (and you) the trouble. Bonus points if it’s hidden, so it’s convenient and stylish.
6. A Dresser – So They Don’t Live Out of a Suitcase
Long-term guests will appreciate a dresser where they can unpack instead of constantly rummaging through their suitcases like they’re on a week-long scavenger hunt. If you have the space, this is a game-changer for making guests feel truly at home.
7. A Soft Rug – Because Nobody Wants to Step on a Cold Floor
I didn’t realize how much of a difference this made until I got one myself. Guests love it. It instantly makes the room feel cozy, and let’s be real—who doesn’t want to wake up and have their feet touch something soft and plush instead of cold, hard floors? Trust me on this one!
8. A Frame with a WiFi QR Code – Because No One Wants to Ask for the Password
Print out your WiFi info or turn it into a QR code so guests can scan and connect instantly. It’s a small touch, but it makes a huge difference (and saves you from repeating “It’s ‘Guest123,’ capital G, no spaces” five times).
9. Florals – Because a Little Greenery Goes a Long Way
Adding a small vase with fresh or faux flowers makes the room feel warm and inviting. It’s a tiny detail that makes the space feel more intentional—and let’s be honest, it makes for a great Instagram moment.
10. Scents – The Cherry on Top of a Cozy Space
A room that smells amazing is instantly more inviting. Whether it’s a candle, room spray, or a diffuser, this small touch will leave a lasting impression. Pro tip: Bundle this with the WiFi frame and florals on a small tray for a polished, thoughtful touch.
