One of the most important decisions when purchasing furniture for your home is the dining table. Why? No matter what, this piece of furniture gets used A LOT. It is the place for eating regular meals, big family gatherings, and more.
Sometimes, it is hard to figure out the best option for you. Today, I am going to tell you how to select the dining table that works best for you!
Here are the important factors to look out for when shopping for a dining table:
1) Budget: This is what most people think about first. Dining tables come in all price ranges, so make sure you set a budget that you are comfortable with. I suggest investing in a more expensive, better-quality table and more affordable chairs, so it is easier to change up your space.
2 ) Size & Space: Before you fall in love with a table, consider the size and space of the area you want to place it in. Measuring your room is key to ensuring you are buying the right size. Make sure to have at least 36 inches of free space around the table to pull out chairs more comfortably. If you don’t have that type of space, consider getting a round table. If you want to fit more seats on a non-daily basis, look for an extendable table.
3) Shape: Like I mentioned above, understanding the different shapes of tables will help narrow down what works for your space and you. Here are some typical shapes and when you should use them:
- Rectangular: Good for bigger spaces & larger families.
- Round: Perfect for small spaces & cozy gatherings.
- Square: Ideal for square rooms or seating for 4.
- Oval: Good for larger seating, but softens the space.
Each shape has a unique vibe! Think about the space’s layout and how you host to create the ambience you want.
4 ) Maintenance & Material: This factor depends on your stage of life. For example, are you a family with babies or small children? You may want to consider getting a table made of easy-to-maintain material, like solid hardwood. If your dining table is for a formal dining room, where you only host a few times a year, you may want to consider more durable materials, such as marble.
5 ) Functionality: This one goes hand in hand with the point above. Considering the function of the space is important for narrowing down the type of dining table that suits your needs. Do you have young kids? Are you constantly hosting events? Do you use your dining table for working, crafting, or other things besides having a meal? These are all questions you should ask yourself before purchasing this large piece of furniture.
6 ) Style & Aesthetic: Your dining table will be a statement piece, so consider your style. Is it modern, transitional, or mid-century? What’s great about a dining table is that it is the best place for mixing metals and styles without clashing. Choose 2 styles max to give it the balance it needs while providing interest in the space.
After choosing the right table, we don’t want to forget about the chairs. Chairs add a layered interest to the table. Depending on your style, it is a great place to add a pop of muted color and possibly a different material, like velvet or leather. For styling the table, you can use accessories, like a large bowl or a nice vase, and change them seasonally.
Now that you have a guide to help you choose a dining table, you’re probably wondering: “What does that look like visually? How do I know what shape to get? Well, worry not! Below, I’ve created a diagram to help you understand standard dining room sizes and shapes that can be used in those spaces.

And there you have it! When choosing a table, considering factors from budget to style will help you find the best one for your space. Remember: It’s all about finding what is best for you. Use this visual and the tips above as a base guide, and don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the perfect look for your space.
Here is to creating happy spaces,
