One of the biggest decisions made when moving into a new space is what couch to buy. If you’re anything like us, my family and I spend a majority of our time on our couch. Whether you are watching TV, talking to people, or cuddling, you want to make sure it’s comfortable for you and your guests. Deciding on what type of couch to buy can be tough as there are many factors to consider to find the best option. Lucky you, I’m here to help! Let’s get started.
1 ) Space & Layout
I always say, that although a sectional always seems the more space-saving way to go, you want to ensure you are looking at the overall space and layout of your family or living room.
When you have a larger open concept space, a sectional will provide the maximum space without it looking too heavy in the room. However, think about the traffic flow in the room. Are there other rooms that are attached to the area, and a bigger couch will close it off? If your room is smaller, I would opt for a traditional couch with chairs to provide an open feel while giving you the seating space you need.
2 ) Functionality & Lifestyle
This factor is super important to consider. Many people just think about maximizing space and opt for a sectional, but it’s important to think about the functionality of the space and how you use it.
For example, is this a space where you are mostly watching movies and lounging? If so, a sectional might work. Is this also a space where you host or have more conversations? It’s better to do a stand-alone couch with chairs. The other thing to note is that if you are someone who wants flexibility with changing the furniture around in the room from time to time, a sectional won’t allow you to do that as much as stand-alone couches and chairs.
3 ) Consider Practicality
When it comes to making decisions on a couch, practicality is very key to making the right choice. Many people do not think moving their couches or the amount of maintenance needed (cleaning, damage, etc.)
If you will be moving homes in the future and plan to take the majority of furniture with you, make sure you consider that moving a larger sectional is harder than individual pieces of furniture. Also, consider upkeep or replacement costs. Sectionals tend to be more difficult to clean and expensive to replace versus a traditional couch.
4 ) Aesthetics & Style
The final factor to consider is your style and aesthetics. Most times, when adding a sectional, you have to remember that the piece will be the main focal point of the area. You need to ensure that you balance that piece with other accessories in the room.
Your style is equally as important, so make sure to think about colors, patterns, and the overall theme you want throughout the space. You should consider this before buying a sectional.
No matter what you choose to do with your space, the most important thing is that YOU love it. I hope these points help you make the right decision when choosing between a sectional or traditional sofa. If you have the space and love the idea of a cozy, all-in-one seating area, a sectional is a great pick. But if flexibility, balance, and versatility are priorities, a sofa-chair setup might be the way to go.
