One of the biggest struggles I hear from many of you is about styling a coffee table. How do you style a round, rectangular, or nested coffee table? Are the rules any different? Worry not! Today, I’m sharing my easiest tips and tricks for styling your coffee table, no matter the shape. Welcome to Coffee Table Styling 101!
I will focus on the three types of rectangular, round, and nesting-styled tables. This guide is to help you get started and make your coffee table look like I came to your house and styled it myself. Ha!
Whether you have a rectangular, round, or nesting table, my tip is to use the “Odd Rule.” When styling, add different types of accessories in groups of one, three, or five. To make it easy to visualize, see the guide below.
While using these visuals, here is a general list of tips to keep in mind:

1. Scale matters! Make sure you are not using too many small items. Instead, always go for larger sized items based on the size of the coffee table.
2. LESS is MORE! Don’t go out and buy twenty random trinkets to put on there.
3. Be realistic about the placement and amount of use for your table. Are you going to put in a loft or living room? Will it be used every day, or is it more of a decorative piece?
4. Stick to a theme. You want the table to look clean and collected, rather than a mix of aesthetics.
5. Think about the different heights and shapes of your accessories for balance. Always have two to three decor pieces with different height levels (ex: vase with flowers, tapered candles with candle holders, etc.).
6. Use functional pieces like decorative boxes to hide remotes, coasters, and other essentials.
7. Depending on the type of table, take advantage of the space underneath with storage baskets for blankets, extra pillows, and more.
8. Use Greenery with a large vase- opt for a larger size, minimum 8-10 inches in height and 6-7 inches in width.
If you take away anything from this blog, remember the “Odd Rule.” It is a fool-proof way to make accessory arrangements and styling easier. It makes the process of decorating less stressful and more enjoyable. No matter what you choose to do while styling, the most important thing is that YOU love it.
