Below are 5 tips to help you pick out the right rug for your space. Let’s get started!
1. Consider Standard Sizing
As a general rule of thumb, an 8×10 or 9×12 rug will work well with most spaces. These sizes provide a great base point and will help you visualize how a rug will actually fit inside your room. Once you do this, you can see if it’s a perfect fit, or if you need a smaller or bigger size rug.
2. Use Layering
If you have a smaller rug that you want to include in your space, add a larger, neutral-tone rug to expand its length. For instance, if you have an 8×10 rug that you already love, you can find an affordable, plain, 9×12 rug to add underneath it.
3. Consider Material and Durability
The rugs chosen should differ in the amount of durability and material used, depending on the room type. For example, dining areas and kitchens, which are high-traffic areas, should have rugs that can handle food spills, dirt, and crumbs frequently. Consider using washable rugs, such as ones with a low-pile material, for easy cleanup and maintenance.
4. Visualize Furniture Placement
Think about the amount and type of furniture in your space. When adding a rug, all the furniture should fit within the rug or at least the front legs of it.
5. Price Does Not Equal Quality
You do not need to break the budget to get a good-quality rug. So many options exist, and they do not require spending thousands of dollars. Plus, because your personal style can change quickly, find a rug that suits you and is not an extreme investment.
