5 Common Decorating Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Do you feel like whenever you decorate your space, something goes wrong or something is just not quite right and the result is not what you hoped for? Don’t worry, I am here to help you!

Here are 5 common decorating mistakes, and ways to fix them!

1) Prematurely Choosing Paint Colors

When decorating a space, many people tend to choose paint colors before considering other parts of the room, like their furniture choices and color palette. To avoid this, look at these elements beforehand. For instance, if you have a brightly or neutral colored couch, you want to consider that before painting your living or family room a certain color.

2) Continuous Trend-Hopping

Trend-hopping is a big problem across all industries, especially interior design. Constantly changing style or buying more furniture/accessories to follow something that won’t be popular for another week or two can be expensive, unsustainable, and overwhelming. If you genuinely like a decorative piece or a style, invest in it instead. It allows you to bring your personality and unique touch to the space!

3) Wrong Rug Size

The sizing of your rug can make or break a space. People tend to buy rugs that are too small for their space, which can make the room feel disconnected or smaller than it actually is.  To avoid this, follow these rules: Make sure you can fit all of your furniture within the rug or at least have the rug touch the front legs of your furniture.

4) Overcrowding with Decor

People tend to clutter their space with secondary accessories, like several accent pillows, excessive plants, and unnecessary table-knick knacks. It makes the space look messier and smaller than it actually is. In order to keep a clean, cohesive look, focus on a few bigger furniture pieces.

5) Scaling Issues for Mirrors & Artwork

Sometimes, people styling their space using mirrors and artwork tend to ignore their size and end up putting an item too big or small for this space. For mirrors, as mentioned in 5 Functional Design Hacks for Small Spaces, keep in mind the size itself.  For full-length mirrors, have four to six inches of space around the mirror. For accented mirrors (e.g. above a console table or sofa) the mirror should be two-thirds to three-quarters of the surrounding furniture or the area you are trying to cover. In terms of artwork, hang the pieces at eye level, which tends to be 6-8 inches above furniture.

And that’s all five common mistakes made while decorating a space, as well as easy solutions to correct them! By addressing problems with scaling to cluttering, you’ll create a space that is functional while “speaking you.”

Stay tuned for next week’s post, where we will talk about choosing the perfect lighting for any room!

Cheers to creating happy spaces,
